Social Security Disability Claims Based on Depression

Social Security Disability Claims Based on Depression

  • In order to win Social Security Disability on Depression alone, the individual must have a long history of inpatient psychiatric hospitalization, and ongoing psychiatric or psychological treatment
  • The Level of Depression must still be high, despite trying a variety of medications
  • Psychiatrists and Psychologists often assign individuals with a Global Assessment of Functioning Score, or a GAF score
  • A GAF score of 50 or below is usually consistent with extreme symptoms
  • Low scores link back to the inability to perform activities
  • An Attorney may give a psychiatrist or a psychologist a medical questionnaire that addresses functional limitations that result from Depression
  • It is important to document any Emergency Room visits, due to Suicide attempts or idealizations
  • Substance Abuse may be found within Depression claims, so it should be determined that the Abuse is not contributing to the original problem
